Kindergarten Lottery FAQ's

  • How does the lottery work?
    1. Register at your neighborhood school
    2. Fill out a Rosedale application at the time of registration.
    3. The lottery will take place January 14th this year.
    4. We will use a random lottery generator to assign spots.
    5. You will receive a letter telling you if you got into Rosedale, or if you have been placed on the waitlist.
  • Why can’t I register my student at Rosedale?
    • Only currently enrolled siblings are allowed to register at Rosedale, all other interested parents must register at their assigned School of Residence. Rosedale is a magnet school, which means we do not have a “neighborhood”. The only way to attend is to win the lottery.
  • What are my chances of getting in?
    • This varies from year to year based on the number of incoming siblings we have and the number of lottery entries. Unfortunately, there is no way of knowing what the odds are.
  • How long does my student stay on the waitlist?
    • Your student will remain on the waitlist through the first trimester of the first grade. Studies have shown that students have a much lower success rate in immersion after this point. Academically it would not be beneficial to begin an immersion program after the first trimester of first grade.
  • When will I be notified about the lottery?
    • This year the lottery will be held on January 19th. Parents will be mailed a letter on this date.
  • How can I increase my chances of getting in?
    • Be sure to register on time and fill out a Rosedale application.
  • Can I enter my child’s name in the Rosedale lottery if we do not live in the Chico Unified School District boundaries?
    • We usually have a long waiting list of CUSD students who are waiting to get in to our program. You need to live within the CUSD boundaries and have already registered for kindergarten at your neighborhood school in order to enter the lottery. Form 11’s (Intra-district transfers) will not be approved until the wait list is exhausted.
  • Does Rosedale have an after school program for kindergarten?
    • The answer is yes, but that program is operated by C.A.R.D. and they have limited spots available each year.

To enter Kindergarten in the fall, a child must be five years old on or before September 1, 2024.

To enter Transitional Kindergarten, a child must turn five between September 2, 2024 and June 2, 2025

Parents should register their children at the school serving their residence area.

Proof of residence is required.

An online school locator program is available at

http://www.chicousd.org/Schools/ School-Locator/index.html.

Parents can input their address and find out their resident school. Parents are strongly encouraged to register on the designated dates. Priority will be assigned based on the date of registration. The time of day that registration occurs will not constitute a priority. All children will be enrolled, but some may have to attend a school other than the one serving their residence area.

The following are required to register a child:

(1) Proof of date of birth (birth certificate, birth record, passport, baptismal certificate, affidavit of the parent, guardian or custodian of the minor or other legal proof)

(2) Two forms verifying proof of residency, and

(3) Written immunization record from a physician, nurse, or health department. Children must be immunized for MMR - measles, mumps and rubella (German measles), polio, DTaP - diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis (whooping cough), Hepatitis B, and Varicella (chicken pox) prior to school entry. State law requires students beginning Kindergarten have all required immunizations. Students missing immunizations will not be able to start school until we receive these records.
